Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
What is ERCP? Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, is a specialized medical procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and gallbladder. It combines the use of X-ray imaging with an endoscope—a long, flexible tube with a light and camera—allowing doctors to view the inside of the digestive system in detail.
Why is ERCP Needed? ERCP is often recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), unexplained weight loss, or abnormal results from other imaging tests. Conditions that ERCP can help diagnose or treat include:
- Gallstones blocking the bile duct
- Tumors or cancers of the pancreas or bile ducts
- Narrowing (strictures) or scarring in the ducts
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
How Does ERCP Work? During an ERCP, the patient is sedated to ensure comfort. The doctor carefully guides the endoscope through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). A special dye is then injected through the endoscope to highlight the bile and pancreatic ducts on X-ray images. This helps the doctor identify any blockages or abnormalities.
If necessary, ERCP can also be used to perform treatments such as:
- Removing stones from the bile duct
- Placing stents to keep narrowed ducts open
- Taking tissue samples (biopsy) for further examination
Benefits of ERCP ERCP is a minimally invasive procedure that can diagnose and treat conditions in a single session, reducing the need for more invasive surgeries. It provides an effective way to relieve symptoms and improve digestive health.
What to Expect After ERCP Most patients can go home the same day or the day after the procedure. Some temporary side effects like sore throat, mild discomfort, or bloating may occur. Your doctor will provide instructions for post-procedure care and discuss any necessary follow-up.
